Service Project Opportunity for The Nest:

Pattern for the Nest of Johnson County Simple Tote Bag  (14" x 14")

You will need:
  • A 15" X 30" piece of sturdy fabric.
  • 2 - 20" by 2-1/2" strips of fabric for straps
  • Thread
Procedure:
Cut all pieces to the measurements.

Fold the fabric, right sides together, with a fold in the longest length of fabric. Using a 1/2" seam allowance, sew both side seams. Use a zigzag stitch or a serger to finish seams. To maintain the strength of our finished bag, it is strongly recommended that you do not skip a seam finish.

Zigzag or serge the top raw edge. Fold the finished edge (matching the wrong sides of the fabric and the seams) down 1 inch. Top stitch the top hem in place.

Turn bag right side out and press.

Using the 20" by 2-1/2" strips, create straps. Take one strip and fold in half lengthwise, with right sides together. Sew a quarter inch seam. Turn and press. Repeat with the second strip.

Along the top edge of the bag, measure 3" from the side seam and mark.

Align the outer edge of the strap up with your mark and top stitching. Sew the straps in to the bag using a square for added strength.
